ACT NOW and REquest a REvote for the WESTPORT HIGH SALE

On March 26th, the Kansas City Public School Board voted against the sale of the Westport High School to be repurposed into market rate apartments as well as a charter high school, despite the recommendation of the KCPS team of advisors recommending the sale be approved.

On April 4th, all of the emails, letters, and written concerns about the decision to VOTE DOWN the sale of Westport High School will be distributed to the board.  I would like you to be one of the supporting voices who speaks out and REQUEST THEY RECONSIDER the sale and redevelopment of Westport High into the proposed market rate housing and a charter school.  Many of you have already voiced your support over the two years in which the KCPS Repurposing Initiative has asked for your input and has now delivered it as their recommendation to the School Board.  I would ask that you agree to voice a positive, but impactful plea for the School Board to RECONSIDER THE WESTPORT HIGH SCHOOL SALE and assist the citizens who supported the Repurposing Initiative Advisors, the Superintendent, the affected neighborhoods and communities, and the public school students in need of the high school facility.

The deadline for submitting letters for the April 4th distribution, which will be the first distribution of feedback since they voted 4:3 against the sale, is 9:00 am the morning of April 4th.  It is recommended that our disapproval be present AT THAT TIME.  However, you can submit letters of concern after April 4th, and they will be distributed to the board at a later date.  We are trying to have an optimal impact during this crucial time to show immediate concern and ask for immediate reconsideration.  Letters can be emailed to Sandra Nunnaley, Secretary of the KC School Board, at

To the Kansas City School Board:

I, __________________, officially request the reconsideration of the sale of                     Westport High School to the Foutch Brothers for their recommended redevelopment               plans.  Please RE-Vote in favor of this sale and support the recommendations of your             Repurposing Initiative, your Superintendent and Administration, and the affected                 neighborhoods and communities, which include many public school students that                   would benefit from the charter school slated for use in the redevelopment plan.  We,               as a community, have voiced this desire once through the Redevelopment                                 Initiative, whom you insightfully organized to serve the purpose.  Please listen to                     them, as they have listened to us.

The Kansas City School Board has voted 4 to 3 against the sale of Westport High School to the Foutch Brothers, who plan to redevelop the building into Market Rate Apartments and a Charter High School.  The selected charter school, Academie Lafayette, is one of the HIGHEST PERFORMING IN THE STATE and is a PUBLIC SCHOOL.  The Superintendent of Kansas City Public Schools and their Repurposing Initiative recommended this sale after almost two years of due diligence and research, engaging both specialists in repurposing and the community.  The message needed is a positive yet impactful desire from the public for the KC School Board to RECONSIDER AND REVOTE in support of the recommendation by the Superintendent and Repurposing Initiative.  Over the last two years hundreds of Kansas City residents in the Westport High area adamantly guided and supported the sale of Westport High for the use of market rate apartments and a charter school facility proposed by the Foutch Brothers.  This guidance and support manifested through the process implemented by the KCPS Repurposing Initiative.

The Kansas City Public School Repurposing Initiative is a program that was created BY THE KC SCHOOL BOARD.  It was set up with parameters, guidelines, and qualifiers to be met during the process of selecting appropriate reuses for these empty school buildings.  ALL OF THESE PARAMETERS WERE MET AND APPROVED over the two years of evaluation for the sale of the Westport High School building.  According to the KCPS Repurposing Initiative Westport High Assessment, the communities in Midtown KC affected by the repurposing of this school identified

“multiple reuses that would benefit the neighborhood including education (college extension, adult education, K-12 school, community arts/theater), housing, community center, multiple uses/organizations.”

We need to verbally request the School Board reconsider their vote and act in support of THEIR Repurposing Initiative, their Superintendent, and the affected neighborhoods and communities, which include many public school students that would benefit from the charter school slated for use in the redevelopment plan.

Sharing the Love on Valentines Day

It’s Valentines Day again.   And since we’ve been shown so much LOVE over the past year from all of our supports, clients, friends, followers, and fans…we are ready to Share the Love.

Below you will find two pristine examples of expertly executed, technically choreographed Valentine’s Day performances…both of which exhibit the love and admiration we, as entrepreneurs, have for all of our fans and clients.  We love you.  So much, in fact, that we couldn’t decide how best to convey and express our true feelings.  Justin thought the essence of Danny Zuko and Sandy from Grease would exhibit the “we love you, goodie goodie or bad to the bone, we just want you in our lives” vibe.  (reliving his days with a full head of thick silky locks, no doubt)  I, however, felt we should express our appreciation with a “feelin’ groovy, roller-funk love fest” kind of vibe, admittedly personifying my unfulfilled 70’s roller-goddess fantasies.  So as all good business partners must do from time to time… we decided to both stand our ground, dig in our heels, and hand over the decision to a third party. (that would be you!)

So take a moment, a small break from sniffing your red roses, eating your chocolates, and salivating over the studly singing valentine in the office, and VOTE for the superior Valentine performance from DCG.  Give us, the co-owners of 3 children and two companies, the gift of one of us being right.  Please remember to take this vote seriously.  We spent countless hours rehearsing these two numbers and have endured injuries and an innumerable amount of snickering bystanders.  Choreography and artistic design courtesy of the Nationally renown Kansas City Ballet Artistic Director, Devon Carney.

Disclaimer: Devon Carney took no part in the choreography or artistic direction for either of these performances.  However he is our neighbor, therefore must bear some responsibility for these performances.

Let the official Third-Party 2014 DCG Valentine Vote commence!  Just watch the show and then vote on the pole found below.  Happy Valentines Day!

DCG says HECK YES to High Five: the Missouri State Official Greeting

High Five Montage2

Friends do it.

High Five Montage

Politicians and Athletes do it.

High Five Montage3

Even little rabbits and large whales do it!

Let’s do it!  Says Rep. Courtney Allen Curtis while introducing House Bill 1624 to the Missouri House of Representatives.

Surprisingly, the bill is making progress, having already undergone its second reading.

According to House Bill 1624:
“To amend chapter 10, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to the designation of the official state greeting. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows: Section A. Chapter 10, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 10.190, to read as follows: 10.190. The ‘high five’ is selected for and shall be known as the official state greeting in the state of Missouri.”

If this bill passes, effective Aug. 28, Missourians can look forward to an increased cool factor for their state, as well as a great marketing opportunity to draw more talent to the hidden jewel of the Midwest: Kansas City!  With Streetcars and High Fives galore, the progressive magnetism exuding from this Royal City is sure to attract the best and brightest nation wide.

Come on Kansas City! Get into the “Swing” of Things!

Is it true that a city that plays together, stays together?  What happens when a city adds a little fun to the mix?  Could there be large scale city benefits by introducing an interactive reminder that the simple things in life, are what truly bring us joy?  This is precisely what Montreal has done with their “21 Swings” project.  Adding some intentional fun to the mix is a GOOD IDEA!  We could all use a reminder to remember our inner kid, find our joy, and lighten up and live a little!  As an avid Kansas City -ian, I officially move for a repeat of this fantastic movement in our beautiful city.  In an attempt to continue building a happier and healthier Kansas City, I’m ready to get into the swing of things.  Who’s with me???

21 Swings
Exercise in musical cooperation

Every spring, an interactive installation takes over a high-traffic area in Montréal’s Quartier des spectacles and sets a collective ritual. The installation offers a fresh look at the idea of cooperation, the notion that we can achieve more together than separately.

The result is a giant instrument made of 21 musical swings; each swing in motion triggers different notes, all the swings together compose a piece, but some sounds only emerge from cooperation.

The project stimulates ownership of the public space, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, and creating a place for playing and hanging out in the middle of the city centre.

A traveling version of the project is currently being made for these collective moments to spread around the world.

Proud owners of a publication.

DCG is the proud new owner of an article in the Thinking Bigger Business Media’s Annual Guide for Entrepreneurs!

Hooray for us!  But enough about me, lets talk about how contributing to a publication can help you and your business.

The most obvious answer to the questions, “Why would I want to write content for someone else?”, is: Content is Valuable!  The content you provide to a publication, whether it’s a blog, magazine, television program, still content that you can use to boost your business’ exposure, or “social proof”.  Your social proof refers to how visible you are to a potential audience.  How easily can you be found?  If you’ve contributed content, you can increase your visibility through several ways:

1. You will be featured in someone else’s content.  This is like free advertising.  If you’ve written an article, are acting as a contributor, or even underwrite a product or service…make sure you brand the content appropriately to put your stamp on the content in some way.

2. Reuse the content.  You can take your content and post it to your heart’s content on all of your own social media, blogs, and websites….just check to make sure of the date of publication.  Most people want to be the first to release new content, which brings up another important point to consider.  Reusing an article you wrote for magazine A and serving it up as sloppy seconds to magazine B leave a bad taste in both mouths!  HA! I love puns!  So, if you want to recycle your content for more exposure through a new source, make sure you put a new spin on it and give it new life. (it’s the decent thing to do)

3 Backlinks are your friend.  Backlinks are a great tool in your SEO (search engine optimization) arsenal!  Use them liberally with your newfound content patron.  Make sure you contact Magazine A and ask them to backlink the online version of your article to your website from their website.  You can also tag and link up to Magazine A on all of your social and digital formats to increase your reach to their audience.  Some places even let you post on their walls and groups.  This is a great way to link yourself to a new audience.  There are several tricks of the trade on how to optimize this effort.  Check out this smart lady to learn more about that.

4. Did anyone ever teach you how to brag? You can boast about your new smarty pants publication through many social media platforms.  Most have a special place reserved specifically to showcase a link to your new fame and notoriety through a “publications” section.  Break out your french horn and play a blaring rendition of, “I’m so smart, other people want to know what I know.”

Well, since you’ve read this far, I’m going to let you in on a little secret of mine.  Most publications are desperate for content.  That’s right.  It’s just not that hard to find someone willing to let you do their job for them!  Most editors are in a mad rush to fill each magazine or blog with something new and witty.  Don’t let them down when they give you a shot, and chances are, they’ll come back for more!
